Lai Pei Jing is hoping to end her nearly four-year title drought at the Korea Open 2026, returning to the tournament where she last tasted championship success.
The Malaysian mixed doubles specialist won the 2022 Korea Open alongside former partner Tan Kian Meng. Now competing with Hoo Pang Ron, Pei Jing has another opportunity to chase the title after the pair reached the quarter-finals in Yeosu, South Korea.
Lai Pei Jing Faces World No. 2 Chinese Pair
Pang Ron and Pei Jing advanced with a convincing 21-8, 21-15 victory over South Korea’s Jin Sung Ik and Lee Seung Hee in just 32 minutes.
The world No. 15 Malaysians now face a much tougher challenge against China’s world No. 2 combination Jiang Zhenbang and Wei Yaxin.
A victory would take them into the semi-finals and move Pei Jing another step closer to ending her long wait for a title.
Coach Ameer Hopes for Another Breakthrough
Coach Ameer Amri Zainuddin believes the pair can challenge for the championship, although their demanding schedule remains a concern.
The Korea Open is their fifth tournament in five consecutive weeks, making physical recovery and mental focus particularly important.
Ameer expressed his hopes for the pair: “Of course, I hope they can win the title, but what matters most is that they are playing at their best.”
He also acknowledged that he had not yet assessed their current physical condition, as he was in Kuala Lumpur rather than accompanying them in Yeosu.
Despite the demanding schedule, Pang Ron and Pei Jing have reached at least the semi-finals in three of their previous four tournaments.
They came closest to a breakthrough at the French Open, where they finished runners-up to China’s Feng Yanzhe and Huang Dongping.
Four-Year Wait Adds Meaning to Korea Open Campaign
For Lai Pei Jing, returning to the Korea Open brings back memories of her 2022 triumph.
Her new partnership with Pang Ron has shown encouraging progress, but the challenge now is to maintain their form against the world’s strongest opponents.
Meanwhile, Malaysia’s other mixed doubles pair, Chen Tang Jie and Chan Wen Tse, exited after losing 7-21, 13-21 to China’s Cheng Xing and Zhang Chi.
With Pang Ron and Pei Jing still in contention, Malaysia’s mixed doubles hopes rest on their ability to overcome another major test.
Nearly four years after her last title, Pei Jing has another chance to turn a familiar tournament into a memorable comeback.
