China’s Li Shifeng created another memorable moment in badminton history after successfully defending his title at the Malaysia Masters 2026.
The Chinese shuttler defeated Thailand’s young talent Panitchapon Teeraratsakul in straight sets, 21-16, 21-17, during the men’s singles final at the Unifi Arena in Bukit Jalil.
With the victory, Li Shifeng became only the second men’s singles player to defend the Malaysia Masters crown successfully, following Malaysian badminton legend Lee Chong Wei, who dominated the tournament from 2009 until 2012.
A Much-Needed Confidence Boost
The championship was especially meaningful for Shifeng as it ended his long wait for another major title. His previous tournament victory came at the Hong Kong Open in September last year.
The win also arrived at the perfect moment ahead of a busy schedule in the BWF World Tour calendar, with the Singapore Open and Indonesian Open taking place over the next two weeks.
After the match, Shifeng shared that injuries and physical challenges had affected his form over the past several months, making the Malaysia Masters victory even more important for his confidence.
According to the Chinese star, winning again reminded him to continue believing in himself despite the difficult periods he experienced earlier this season.
Following Lee Chong Wei’s Achievement
Before Li Shifeng’s successful title defence, only Malaysian badminton icon Lee Chong Wei had managed to win the Malaysia Masters men’s singles title in consecutive years.
Chong Wei previously captured the championship four straight times between 2009 and 2012, setting a remarkable standard in Malaysian badminton history.
