KUALA LUMPUR – Men’s doubles shuttlers Nur Izzuddin Rumsani and Goh Sze Fei are welcoming the stiff internal competition as they aim to secure a starting spot for Team Malaysia at the upcoming Sudirman Cup in Xiamen, China, which kicks off next week.
The pair are part of a formidable lineup, with three top-10 ranked teams in the national squad, alongside Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik and Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun.
Izzuddin and Sze Fei made their return to Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) in Bukit Kiara on April 22, where they played a closed-door simulation match against Aaron and Wooi Yik. The national association has chosen not to disclose the outcomes of these simulation games.
“I feel that it is good to have three good pairs in the squad,” said Izzuddin. “This will allow us to have a good chance of winning, regardless of which pair plays. It is also a form of healthy competition for all pairs. Whoever plays will definitely give their best. What is important is that we have to be prepared mentally, physically and tactically for each match.”
Having turned professional late last year, Izzuddin and Sze Fei have found strong momentum on the international circuit.
Though now independent, they appreciated the opportunity to revisit their old training ground at ABM.
“It feels like coming home, BAM has the best facilities and we are thankful to be able to learn from coach Herry IP,” said Sze Fei.
The simulation sessions are part of the final preparations for the Sudirman Cup, which as a mixed team tournament, presents a very different environment from regular individual events.
