National badminton women’s singles player Goh Jin Wei experienced a tough defeat against South Korea’s Kim Ga Eun in her final group match in Paris today. The match, held at the Porte De La Chapelle Arena, was a thrilling contest that ended with scores of 17-21, 22-20, 21-23 after 1 hour and 5 minutes of play. Despite Jin Wei’s impressive performances in the second and third games, she ultimately fell short, marking her fourth loss out of five encounters with Kim Ga Eun.
Jin Wei had started her campaign on a positive note, securing a win against South Africa’s Johanita Scholtz with scores of 23-21, 21-11. Jin Wei, ranked 32nd in the world, has a distinguished track record, including winning the BWF World Junior Championships in 2015 and 2018, and the girls’ singles title at the 2018 Youth Olympics. At the senior level, she also claimed the women’s singles title at the 2017 SEA Games.
Despite her strong start and notable achievements, Jin Wei’s journey in the Olympic tournament ends here as she finished second in Group H. Only the top player from each group advances to the next stage. Kim Ga Eun, who emerged as the group winner, will advance to the round of 16 where she is set to face Gregoria Mariska Tunjung, provided Tunjung remains the winner of Group G. The draw for the knockout stage will be conducted after the completion of all final group matches later tonight.
