The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) has submitted a request to change the schedule of the Malaysian Open, proposing that the tournament be moved from its early-year slot to a later period between 2027 and 2030.
The Super 1000 home tournament has served as the season opener from 2023 to 2026. BAM secretary Kenny Goh confirmed that the national body has asked the Badminton World Federation (BWF) to reschedule the event to a later part of the year.
“We have requested that the Malaysian Open be shifted from the start of the year to April or May from 2027 to 2030,” said Kenny.
“We are waiting for BWF’s approval. Hopefully, they will agree to our request.”
The development comes after men’s doubles player Aaron Chia suggested moving the prestigious tournament to later in the year due to player fatigue following a long season, proposing that the year instead begin with a Super 300 or Super 100 event.
However, Kenny stressed that BAM’s request was not linked to Aaron’s comments.
“Our request has nothing to do with what Aaron said. We already made the request to BWF last May,” said Kenny.
