The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) has played down speculation that Malaysia could step in to host the Badminton World Championships this year, amid growing concerns over India’s suitability as the tournament host.

The World Championships are scheduled to take place in New Delhi from Aug 17–23, but issues during the ongoing Indian Open have raised questions about whether the host nation can meet world-class standards.

Concerns Raised During Indian Open

Several players have voiced dissatisfaction with conditions in New Delhi. Denmark men’s singles star Anders Antonsen withdrew from the Indian Open, citing poor air quality as the main reason for his decision.

Meanwhile, his teammate Mia Blichfeldt criticised the dirty training hall at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex — the same venue slated to host the World Championships.

Further concerns emerged when a monkey was spotted in the spectator seating area, while bird droppings were reportedly found on court, adding to worries over hygiene and safety standards.

BWF Monitoring Situation Closely

In response, the Badminton World Federation (BWF) stated that it is working closely with the Badminton Association of India (BAI) to ensure facilities meet the required international standards before the prestigious event begins.

Despite these assurances, questions remain over whether India should continue as hosts if the issues are not adequately addressed.

Malaysia Not Jumping the Gun

Speculation has emerged that another country may be required to step in should India lose its hosting rights. However, BAM secretary Datuk Kenny Goh said Malaysia is not getting ahead of itself.

“Firstly, there hasn’t been any talks that India can’t host the World Championships,” said Kenny.

His comments suggest that Malaysia will only consider hosting the event if there is an official decision from BWF, rather than acting on speculation.

Focus Remains on Preparation

For now, BAM’s focus remains on ensuring Malaysian players are fully prepared for the World Championships, regardless of where the tournament is held. Any potential change in host nation will depend on BWF’s assessment in the coming months.
