Aaron and Wooi Yik Win Their First Title of The Year At Korea Masters

Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik, world No. 6 men’s doubles pair, won their first title of the season. They triumphed over South Korea’s Jin Yong and Kim Won-ho with a 21-23, 21-19, 21-14 victory in the Korea Masters final. This victory marked their second Open title, following their win at the Denmark Open last year. It also came after a tough period for Wooi Yik, who had been recovering from a toe injury. The injury was sustained after the Paris Olympics.

The win boosted their confidence, especially after they crashed out in the quarter-finals at Denmark Open last month. Aaron expressed how important the victory was, saying it showed they were getting back into form. With this result, the pair moved up to 10th place in the Road to Hangzhou rankings, earning 63,090 points. This improved their chances of qualifying for the World Tour Finals in December.

However, they still face a challenge. To secure a spot in the Finals, they must deliver strong performances at the Japan and China Masters. Even if more than two pairs from a country are ranked in the top eight of the Road to Hangzhou standings, only two pairs are allowed to compete. Currently, they rank third among the Malaysian pairs competing for the top-eight spots, with tough competition from Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani and Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun.

National coach Tan Bin Shen was pleased with their performance. He noted that the win lifted their morale and demonstrated they were regaining their momentum. He emphasized the importance of consistency as they still need around 12,000 more points to qualify. As the duo prepares for the upcoming tournaments, Aaron and Wooi Yik are determined to stay focused and build on their recent success.
