Men’s doubles shuttlers Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik, who have successfully qualified for the World Tour Finals in Hangzhou on four occasions (2019, 2020, 2022, and 2023), are now facing a significant challenge to secure their spot for this year’s prestigious event.
Currently, they are ranked 11th in the Race to Hangzhou rankings, partly due to missing the Japan and Korean Opens because of a slight injury sustained by Wooi Yik from Paris Olympics. Besides, men’s doubles coach, Tan Bin Shen has confirmed that the pairs will not complete in Hong Kong Open tomorrow. This is to ensure Wooi Yik makes a full recovery before commiting to any tournaments.
This setback has allowed other Malaysian pairs Mohd Haikal Nazri-Choong Hon Jian (No. 6), Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani (No. 7) and Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun (No. 8) to move ahead of them in the standings.
With only the top eight pairs qualifying for the Finals, Aaron and Wooi Yik need to deliver strong performances in the remaining high-stakes tournaments of the season. These include the China Open (September 17-22), Arctic Open (October 8-13), Denmark Open (October 15-20), Japan Masters (November 12-17), and China Masters (November 19-24). Their path to qualification will depend on bridging the current gap and excelling over their competitors in these crucial upcoming events.
World Tour Final Qualification
The HSBC BWF World Tour Finals are scheduled to take place from December 11 to 15, 2024. The event will feature the top eight players and pairs from each category in the BWF World Tour Rankings, with each country allowed a maximum of two players or pairs.
Only the top 14 results from BWF World Tour tournaments throughout the year will be considered for the BWF World Tour Ranking. Among these, no more than three results from Super 100 tournaments will be included.
