While the final location for Malaysia’s professional badminton players’ new training base hasn’t been confirmed, national mixed doubles pair Goh Soon Huat and Shevon Lai Jemie are hoping for better-quality courts and improved cooling systems.
Under the Road to Gold (RTG) programme, both Soon Huat-Shevon and the men’s doubles pair Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani will benefit from upgraded training facilities. The initiative, led by Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, aims to support independent players with improved environments as part of the nation’s long-term preparation for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Currently, both pairs are training at the Pioneer Badminton Centre in Endah Parade under coach Teo Kok Siang, alongside other independent athletes.
“We haven’t received a direct update from the RTG committee yet, but it’s encouraging to hear about the efforts being made,” said Soon Huat. “We’ve been training here for over three years now.”
Shevon added, “While the current facilities are decent with rubber flooring and fans, top-tier training venues should ideally feature high-quality courts and proper cooling systems. Badminton is a physically demanding sport, and consistent training takes a toll on our bodies—having the right court surface helps prevent injuries.”
She also highlighted the importance of ventilation, noting that cooler environments allow athletes to train longer and more efficiently.
In addition, the pair expressed their preference for a private training venue rather than one in a public mall.
“A private space offers more control and flexibility. In a public venue, we sometimes face scheduling conflicts or limited access, especially if others have booked the courts,” said Shevon. “We also have to be mindful of additional training costs. Ideally, the new centre should be in Kuala Lumpur since most of us are based here.”
Currently ranked No. 6 in the world, Soon Huat-Shevon will next participate in the Japan Open (July 15–20) followed by the China Open (July 22–27).
