Wei Chong-Kai Wun Push for World Tour Finals Qualification

The race for a spot in the season-ending World Tour Finals in Hangzhou (Dec 11-15) is heating up. Malaysia’s men’s doubles coach Tan Bin Shen is urging Man Wei Chong and Tee Kai Wun to keep up the pressure. Currently ranked 7th in the Race to Hangzhou, Wei Chong-Kai Wun have a real shot at qualifying for the prestigious tournament. However, they must remain in the top 8 to secure their place. To guarantee qualification, the pair needs to reach the semi-finals in both the Japan Masters (Nov 12-17) and China Masters (Nov 19-24).

Bin Shen Urges Wei Chong-Kai Wun to Step Up for World Tour Finals Qualification

Bin Shen has made it clear that anything less than a semi-final appearance in both tournaments will leave them dependent on the results of other pairs. This is an unfavorable situation for their qualification hopes. Wei Chong-Kai Wun, currently ranked 14th in the world, have shown more consistency in recent months, but they still haven’t reached a semi-final since their runner-up finish at the Indonesian Open in June. Bin Shen noted that their game hasn’t been as solid since that high point. Many top pairs have also been struggling after the Paris Olympics. As a result, he believes Wei Chong-Kai Wun must seize this opportunity to step up their performance.

The coach highlighted that the pair must improve their consistency, especially in critical moments of matches. While they can score points easily, they also lose points just as quickly. Their confidence against top pairs is still lacking. This is an area they need to work on in order to become more competitive at the highest level.

Malaysia's Men’s Doubles Pairs at Japan Masters

In the Japan Masters, Wei Chong-Kai Wun will likely face tough opponents. This includes China’s world No. 1 pair, Liang Weikeng and Wang Chang, as early as the second round. Before that, they will face French brothers Toma Junior and Christo Popov in their opening match, where they should be favored to win.

Meanwhile, other Malaysian men’s doubles pairs are also in the mix. Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, ranked 3rd in the Race to Hangzhou, have already secured their spot in the World Tour Finals. Additionally, national No. 1 Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik, as well as the pairs of Mohd Haikal Nazri-Choong Hon Jian, Yap Roy King-Wan Arif Wan Junaidi, and Tan Wee Kiong-Nur Mohd Azriyn Ayub, are all in contention for qualification.
