Men’s doubles pair Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani achieved their biggest win on the BWF tour by claiming the Japan Open title in Yokohama on August 25. They defeated world champions Kang Min Hyuk and Seo Seung-jae from South Korea with scores of 21-19 and 21-15, earning their first Super 750 crown.
Previously, the duo had won four titles at the Badminton World Tour Super Series – German Open 2022 (Super 300), US Open 2023 (Super 300), Kaohsiung Masters 2023 (Super 100) and Abu Dhabi Masters 2023 (Super 100).
It was a notable achievement for the pair, as they are the first men’s doubles team to reach the final in 12 years. Additionally, they are the first to win it in 22 years and only the fourth pair to have ever won the championship. The previous Malaysian pair to win the men’s doubles title at the Japan Open were Razif- Jalani Sidek (1986), Cheah Soon Kit-Yap Kim Hock (1998), and Chan Chong Ming-Chew Choon Eng (2002).
With their victory, Sze Fei and Izzuddin earned the US$62,900 (RM273,220) prize at the Badminton World Tour Super 750 Series, the largest of their careers. Additionally, they received 11,000 world ranking points, which could propel them into the top 10 when the rankings are updated.
It was also reported that the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) has agreed to release the duo to turn professional, effective September 1, following a meeting on Saturday, August 24.
As Sze Fei and Izzuddin prepare for their final tournament as national players at the Korea Open, attention will be on them. People will be eager to see if they can continue their winning streak.
